Job specification

Purpose of the role: We are seeking an experienced and creative Hon Social Media Officer to lead on the planning, creation, scheduling, and monitoring of engaging content for the National Equine Forum. You will play a vital role in building awareness, excitement, and engagement across our social platforms before, during, and after the event.


Key responsibilities

Working with the Administrator, Hon. Liaison Officer and Hon. Publicity Officer, the Hon. Social Media Officer will have the following key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a social media strategy tailored to each platform (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and BlueSky);
  • Create engaging and visually appealing content (posts, stories, short videos, reels, graphics) in line with the event’s brand and tone;
  • Schedule and publish content to build engagement and drive attendance before the event;
  • Provide live coverage during the event, including real-time updates, behind-the-scenes content, and audience interaction;
  • Monitor channels for comments, messages, and mentions; engage with followers promptly and professionally;
  • Repurpose content from previous events to help drive traffic to website and social media platforms;
  • Analyse performance metrics and provide a post-event report with insights and recommendations;
  • Coordinate with the wider event team, including sponsors, to amplify content and ensure aligned messaging.

Commitment

This is a part-time role focused on building awareness, excitement, and engagement on NEF’s social media platforms before, during, and after the annual event (usually held in early March).

The busiest period is from early February to mid-March. Additional social media activity is needed at other times for NEF initiatives such as the Spedding Award, Cover Image competition, and other announcements, as well as producing quarterly metrics reports.

Time commitment: Around 6 hours per week from early February to mid-March (increasing as the event approaches), as well as possible attendance at NEF, with occasional work at other times of the year.


Essential skills & experience

  • Proven experience managing social media for events, campaigns, or brands across multiple platforms;
  • Excellent written and visual storytelling skills;
  • Confidence using content creation tools (e.g. Canva);
  • Familiarity with scheduling tools (e.g. Hootsuite, Buffer, Later, etc.);
  • Strong understanding of trends and platform-specific best practices;
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional evenings/weekends in the run up to the event;
  • Proactive, organised, and a strong communicator.

Desirable skills

  • Experience with social media advertising – organic and paid promotion;
  • Understanding of accessibility and inclusive content creation;
  • Existing knowledge of the event’s sector and audience.
